Fighting Illini Fall 87-63 At Iowa

Illinois' women's basketball team closed the road portion of its season Thursday night with an 87-63 loss versus Iowa in Iowa City. The loss drops the Illini to 15-11 overall and 6-9 in conference play while Iowa improves to 18-8, 7-8 in Big Ten play. Senior Tiffanie Guthrie led the Illini with 21 points, leading three Fighting Illini in double figures.

With the Illini up 9-8 in the first half, the Hawkeyes went on a 10-0 run over the next 2:46 to open an 18-9 lead that they would not relinquish. Iowa shot 60.7 percent in the first half compared to Illinois' 33.3 percent and the Hawkeyes went up 47-25 at the halftime break.

For the game Iowa shot 61.5 percent while holding the Orange and Blue to 34.8 percent. The Hawkeyes hit 11 three-pointers, including three by guard Abby Emmert, who was 0-for-1 on the season entering the contest.

Guthrie scored 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting and pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Illini. Angelina Williams poured in 17 points, grabbed six boards and swiped three steals while Erin Wigley had 16 points and five rebounds.

Illinois' next game is its final home game, Sunday, Feb. 27 when seniors Angelina Williams, Tiffanie Guthrie and Jere Issenmann will be honored for Illini careers.
