The third-ranked University of Illinois wrestling team secured its second consecutive Big Ten Dual Meet title with its 24-13 win over the 10th-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers, Sunday afternoon, to finish 7-0-1 in the conference. With the win, Illinois also posted its 16th win of the season, a new school single-season record. It was also Illinois second win over the Gophers this season. Two wrestlers finished the season with perfect conference records to solidify their No. 1 seeds in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament - 174-pounder Pete Friedl and 184-pounder Brian Glynn.

The match began with an Illini win at 149 pounds as No. 12 Anton Dietzen (Sr., Elmhurst, Ill.) scored two takedowns on Danny Williams in a 5-1 decision. The bout had no scoring until Dietzen jumped on the board with a takedown in the last seven seconds of the first period. He added another late in the second for the win and the 3-0 lead for the team. Junior third-ranked Alex Tirapelle (Clovis, Calif.) got his 92nd win of his career with an 8-3 decision over C.P. Schlatter to bring the team score to 6-0. Tirapelle got three takedowns, one in each period, and compiled nearly three minutes of riding time on Schlatter for the decisive victory. Minnesota got its first win of the day as No. 10 Matt Nagel got a reversal and back points in the final minute of the match to defeat No. 11 Donny Reynolds (So., Frankfort, Ill.).

At 174, fourth-ranked Friedl (Jr., Orland Park, Ill.) scored a takedown with 14 seconds left in the match to solidify his 6-3 win over Gabriel Dretsch. Dretsch surprised Friedl with a takedown in the first that he was able to escape from in just three seconds. He took the lead in the bout with a takedown at 14 second left in the first and needed the same situation in the third for the win. The Illini jumped out to 12-3 lead with an overtime win by third-ranked Glynn (Sr., Orland Park, Ill.) over No. 6 Roger Kish, 5-3. Glynn got a takedown in the first on a quick double-leg, but Kish evened the score at 3-3 with a takedown in the second to send the bout to overtime. Glynn scored at the 36-second mark of the sudden victory period for the 5-3 decision. At 197 pounds, 13th-ranked Tyrone Byrd (Jr., Clinton, Ill.) kept the Illini winning streak alive with an 8-4 decision over Matt Koz. He scored a takedown in each period and had over two minutes of riding time for the win.

Minnesota's second-ranked Cole Konrad scored a 13-2 major decision over Mike Behnke (So., Villa Park, Ill.) to bring the team score to 15-7. Junior second-ranked Kyle Ott (Huber Heights, Ohio) took a 9-3 lead on seventh-ranked Bobbe Lowe and held on to win by a 10-7 decision. Ott got four takedowns and allowed only one to record his fifth career win over Lowe. The Illini suffered its third loss of the match when fourth-ranked Mack Reiter caught No. 3 Mark Jayne (Sr., Elyria, Ohio) in a cradle to get the pin in 2:49. Jayne has only two losses on the season, but both came at the hands of Reiter. The fall for Minnesota decreased the Illini lead to 18-13. Sophomore Cassio Pero topped off the Illini win with a pin to counter the Gophers' in 5:29 over No. 20 Tommy Owen. Pero led 4-1 over Owen when the two got in a flurry which ended with Owen on his back.

The Illini wrap up the regular season today at Minnesota and will next be in action on March 5-6 at the Big Ten Championships in Iowa City.
