The seventh-ranked University of Illinois wrestling team opened their home season today by beating Augustana College 45-0. The meet was originally scheduled to have three teams, but due to the inclement weather, Cumberland University couldn't make the trip.
After a disappointing performance in the Las Vegas Invite, the Illini were determined to come out strong - and they did. No. 2 Kyle Ott (125) started the Illini's dominant day by pinning Leo Byrd in the opening period. Today's match was the first for Ott (Huber Heights, Ohio) this season. The senior All-American showed no signs of rust by taking care of Byrd in 1:43 of the first period.
The dominating performance by the Illini seniors continued as All-American Alex Tirapelle (157), who won his 100th career victory at the Las Vegas Invite only to come in second, was looking for redemption against Mike Kerr. Tirapelle (Clovis, Calif.) pinned Kerr at the 2:32 mark of the first period. Tyrone Byrd (197) also came out determined to keep the senior dominance intact. Byrd (Clinton, Ill.) only needed a few seconds into the second period to score a takedown and win by technical fall over John Parkhurst, 17-1.
The spotlight of the day, however, was on the senior All-American Pete Friedl (157). Freidl (Orland Park, Ill.) needed one more win to get to the coveted 100-win mark in his career. He picked up the 100th in fine fashion by pinning Brian Kerr in 1:38 of the first period.
Because today's match falls on the eve of final exam week, head coach Mark Johnson said that the team "accomplished our goal to compete hard and to now let the guys worry about the `student' part of `student-athlete'."
The Illini are back in action at the Midlands Tournament in Evanston, Ill. on December 29-30 to defend their two year reign. The next home meet for the Illini is the Big Ten season opener against Purdue on January 20.
