Illini Women Bounce Back on Final Day at Kentucky

LEXINGTON, Ky. -

The University of Illinois women's tennis team got a spirited effort from all four netters on Sunday at the Kentucky Fall Invitational. After winning only one match on Saturday, they came back on the final day and dropped only one match. The Orange and Blue finished 4-4 in doubles and 7-9 in singles over the three day event.

"I was pleased with the way our players overcame adversity today," assistant coach JoAnne Russell said. "We have a lot to work on but I told them to pick one thing to improve and stick with it. They did and we got better today."

Senior Pavlina Akritas finished third in flight D singles and 3-1 on the weekend. She beat Abilene Christian's Sarah Drummond 6-4, 6-0. Alejandra Meza Cuadra earned a victory on Sunday against Stephania Velazquez of Louisville 6-3, 6-3. Cuadra improved to 2-2 on the weekend.

Emily Wang and Shivani Dave' were going to play Schmitt and Soor of Marshall but an injury forced the Thundering Herd's tandem to withdraw. They played Vojtkova and Durcakova of Eastern Kentucky in an extra match and got an 8-3 victory. Cuadra and Akritas dispatched Dipastina and Messmer of Ohio State 8-5.

The Illini return to the practice courts of Atkins Tennis Center to prepare for the ITA Midwest Regionals in Minneapolis, Minn., October 20-25.
