Fighting Illini Beat Wisconsin 79-66

Illinois' women's basketball team defeated Wisconsin 79-66 Sunday afternoon in front of 3,056 fans at the Assembly Hall. With the victory, the Fighting Illini boosted their record to 11-4 and 3-2 in Big Ten contests while the Badgers fell to 6-9 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

Illinois built a 42-30 halftime lead on the strength of 15 first-half points from Angelina Williams and 10 from Tiffanie Guthrie. At the break the Illini also held a 10-0 advantage in fast break points and had shot just under 50 percent from the field while shooting a perfect 10-for-10 from the line.

In the second half, the Illini built a 17-point lead with 13:54 left, but the Badgers went on a 14-3 run to close the gap to six with 8:45 remaining. From that point until the 3:18 mark, the Fighting Illini held Wisconsin to just six free throws and held a double-digit lead for the remainder of the contest.

Williams led the Illini with 28 points while Guthrie added 16. The Illini received strong bench contributions as sophomore Audrey Tabon set a new career-high with 10 rebounds while also pouring in seven points and Erin Wigley scored nine points and pulled down eight boards.

The Illini shot 50 percent from the field for the game (27-54) and held a 16-0 advantage in fast break points.

Illinois' next game is Wednesday as Michigan State visits the Assembly Hall. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
