CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The University of Illinois Women's Soccer team began exhibition play this afternoon against Indiana State, battling to a 2-1 victory over three 30 minute periods. Junior midfielder Paula Faherty came out firing in the first period, putting the Illini on the board in the opening minute.
The second period saw the Sycamore defense come alive, holding Illinois scoreless despite seven shot attempts and three corner kicks. Indiana State finally broke through the Illini defense in the third period when sophomore forward Nichole Tiggs fired a shot past Illini goalkeeper Lindsay Carstens to tie the match at 1-1. The Illini soon regained possession and control of the match when sophomore forward Jessica Bayne found Senior Andrea Ridgeway for the clinching goal.
The exhibition gave every Illini time on the field and proved valuable in evaluating Illinois' progress and depth as a team.
"Today was all about finding out what skills we still need to work on," said Illinois head coach Janet Rayfield. "By giving everyone a chance to play, we were able to test different combinations and see our strengths and weaknesses on both an individual and team level."
Overall, the Illini controlled possession of the game, out shooting Indiana State 24-2.
Up next: The Illini host the Illinois U-16 Eclipse Select in another exhibition match up Saturday, Aug. 21 at 7:00 p.m. at Illinois Soccer Stadium.
