Despite Illinois' third-place standing after one session, the third-ranked wrestling team will enter the second session of the Midlands Tournament with eight quarterfinalists, the most of the 50-plus teams in the 2004 field. The Illini are looking to defend its Midlands title from a year ago, in the 42nd Annual Classic at Northwestern's Welsh-Ryan Arena.
The Illini will try to push as many as eight wrestlers through to the semifinals tonight as Gabe Flores (125), Mark Jayne (133), Michael Martin (141), Alex Tirapelle (157), Pete Friedl (174), Brian Glynn (184), Tyrone Byrd (197) and Mike Behnke (Hwt) continue action in the championship bracket.
The second session begins tonight at 7 p.m.
