CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Illini defender Sarah Brown (Asheville, N.C./Asheville) was named to the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week after a solid performance for the Illini last weekend.
Brown headed home a goal in both the Illini's 2-1 victory over Purdue Friday and in Illinois' 1-1 draw against Indiana Sunday. Friday's goal served as the game-winner over the Boilermakers, while Sunday's goal helped keep the Illini's unbeaten streak at home intact.
Both of Browns' goals came off corner kicks by senior forward Tara Hurless. In the 2-1 win over Purdue, the Asheville, N.C. native recorded the game-winner at the 70:00 mark from the left side of the box. Brown and Hurless would connect again in the 31st minute of Sunday's contest against Indiana. Using her 6'1" frame, Brown was able to gain control of a pass from Hurless and knock a header past IU goalkeeper Lauren Fabbro.
Last weekend's goals were the first this season for Brown, who recorded her first goal in the same fashion last season in Illinois' 2-0 win over UW-Green Bay. Brown has served as the Illini's starting centerback in every game this season and has been a dominant force protecting the Illini goal.
This weekend, Brown is expected to make her 17th start this season for the Orange and Blue's last conference matchup against Northwestern Friday at 3 p.m. in Evanston, Ill.
