CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - Shereka Wright scored 22 points to lead No. 10 Purdue
to its 11th straight win over Illinois, 58-49 Sunday.
The game was tied 22-22 at halftime, but Purdue (12-2, 2-1 Big Ten) opened
the second half with a 19-4 run. Wright scored five straight points to open the
half and the Boilermakers got 3-pointers from Emily Heikes and Beth Jones as
they built a 41-26 lead with 13:06 to go.
Three straight 3-pointers from the Illini cut a 14-point Purdue lead to five
with 2:30 remaining, but Wright stopped the run with a layup. The Illini did
close to within three points, but Purdue sealed the game at the foul line.
Cindy Dallas led Illinois (7-7, 1-2) with 16 points and 10 rebounds, her
26th career double-double, and Angelina Williams scored 15 points. Erika Valek
had 10 points and 10 rebounds for Purdue, which hasn't lost to Illinois since
Dec. 28, 1997.
Illinois missed its first six shots of the game and had five straight
turnovers at one point, while Purdue rolled off the first eight points of the
game. Guthrie finally scored Illinois' first points with 13:42 to go in the
first half and the Illini caught a spark.
They went on a 10-2 run and tied the game at 10 with 8:43 to go in the half.
Purdue missed five straight shots during the stretch, scoring only on a couple
of free throws from Sharika Webb.
The game was tied five times and the lead changed hands four times before
halftime.
