Chicago, Ill. - The third-ranked Fighting Illini men's gymnatics team finished second in a loaded six-team field at the pretigious Windy City Invitational Saturday evening in Chicago. Illinois finished with 214.425 points, just behind top-ranked Ohio State's total of 215.750. No. 4 Michigan was third with 214.100, followed by No. 6 Iowa (213.150), #14 Illinois-Chicago (208.800) and #8 Minnesota (205.450).
"I'm very pleased with were we finished, especially for the first meet of the year," said Illini head coach Yoshi Hayasaki, now in his 28th season. "We have a lot of room for improvement, but we're still way ahead of where we were last year at this point. This was one of our better season openers in a quite a while."
Illinois' total of 214.425 is over seven points better than last season's Windy City Invite total of 207.050.
Sophomore Justin Spring and junior Ben Newman each took home an individual event title. Spring won the floor exercise with a 9.600, and also posted the team's top high bar score (9.325) to take fifth on the event. Newman, the defending Big Ten pommel horse champion, won the pommel horse with a career-high score of 9.800.
Other notable performances were turned by sophomore Adam Pummer, who scored a 9.250 on vault to tie for fourth and an 8.95 on the parallel bars to tie for third.
The Illini will return to action next Saturday, when they travel to No. 5 Penn State for a dual meet.
