Illinois lost in straight games to No. 7 Nebraska this morning during action at the Illinois State Barker GMC Classic by the score of 27-30, 20-30, 20-30. With the loss, the Illini move to 1-1 on the season while Nebraska improves to 2-0.
Illinois could not overcome Nebraska's advantage in blocking, as the Cornhuskers tallied 20 team blocks in the three games compared to just one block for the Illini. Nebraska's block resulted in a number of hitting errors by the Illini, with the UI hitting just .033 for the match.
Junior setter Erin Virtue had 32 assists and recorded a career-high 15 digs to lead the Illini. Her previous career best was nine digs vs. Michigan State last season. Senior outside hitter Melissa Vandrey was the only Illini player to reach double figures in kills, finishing with a match-high 12. Lisa Argabright had nine kills while Rachel VanMeter added eight.
Anna Schrad led Nebraska with a double-double of 12 kills (tying Vandrey for match high honors) and 12 digs, while Nebraska middles Melissa Elmer and Ally Rebholz combined for 16 kills and 20 blocks.
Illinois closes out the Barker GMC Classic this afternoon, facing Clemson (0-2) at 5 p.m. at ISU's Redbird Arena.
