The eighth-ranked University of Illinois wrestling team dominated in-state and conference rival Northwestern, 37-3, winning nine of 10 matches, Friday night at Huff Hall to improve to 8-3 on the season.
"We were looking for better performances in this match, not wins and losses," head coach Mark Johnson said. "We did that tonight. I was especially glad to see Tony Pedrosa fight for that score in the third period. Overall, it was a great win for us."
Illinois took a shutout into the ninth match with a 34-0 lead winning the first eight bouts. Seventh-ranked Alex Tirapelle (Fr., Clovis, Calif.) got the Illini on the board with a 13-1 major decision over Mike Kimberlin at 157. It took until the 0:17 mark of the first period before he recorded his first takedown, but then scored six points in the second, including a near fall in the final seconds of the period to lead 8-0. He got two takedowns in the third and added a riding time for the win. Top-ranked Matt Lackey (Sr., Moline, Ill.) scored only two takedowns on NU's Jason Erwinski at 165 pounds, but it was good enough for a 5-2 decision to give Illinois a 7-0 boost. Lackey kept his unbeaten streak alive, winning his 26th match of the year.
No. 6 Brian Glynn (So., Orland Park, Ill.) scored five points in the first period with a takedown at 2:09 and near fall points with 12 seconds remaining to lead to a 9-0 shutout major decision of Andrew Curran at 174. Pete Friedl (Fr., Orland Park, Ill.) got his third win of the Big Ten season with a 10-2 major decision over Brendan Curran at 184. He scored two takedowns in the first and one in each of the last two periods, including the final score at 0:29 to secure the major and a 15-0 Illini lead.
At 197 pounds, 15th-ranked Tyrone Byrd (So., Clinton, Ill.) accumulated over 3:30 minutes of riding time, but still made it close as Matt Delguyd escaped with 24 second remaining in the match and threatened to score. Byrd held in for the 4-2 decision and his 35th career win. The Illini increased its lead to 24-0 with a forfeit win at heavyweight.
The 125-pound match was the home debut of senior Twan Pham (Palatine, Ill.) after sitting out with knee injuries. He responded with a 1204 major decision over Tommy Vargas. He scored with only 16 ticks off the clock getting a takedown at the 2:44 mark then showed patience in the final seconds scoring at 0:02 for the 4-1 lead. He added one takedown in the second and two in the third. Sophomore, 11th-ranked, Mark Jayne (Elyria, Ohio) was well on his way to a technical fall at 133 pounds as he led 17-4 before getting Jon Ott on his back and the eventual pin at 6:45. He scored the final takedown at 0:21 and only needed six seconds to turn Ott which cushioned Illinois' lead, 34-0.
Northwestern's John Giacche got the team's only win as he won a 6-2 decision over No. 17 Cal Ferry (Fr., Machesney, Ill.) at 141. Freshman Tony Pedrosa (Oregon, Ill.) was notched at 1-1 tie with Josh Ballard until the final 14 seconds of the match when he took Ballard down for a 3-1 lead. Ballard escaped with nine seconds left, but couldn't score giving Pedrosa the exciting 3-2 decision.
Illinois will be back in action for the final dual of the weekend as they travel Madison, Wis. to face No. 20 Wisconsin in a Sunday, 2 p.m. match-up.
