The seventh-ranked Fighting Illini went on the road Saturday and topped No. 13 Illinois-Chicago by the score of 210.350-208.950. Although Illinois came up 3.000 points shy of their total from last week, the Illini still managed to win five individual events and set a season high team score on the floor exercise (35.525).
"We had an average day today and may have been looking forward to next weekend (when the Illini host No. 1 Penn State and No. 6 Iowa), but we still got a win over UIC," said head coach Yoshi Hayasaki. "This was business and usual for us and should serve as a good tune-up for next weekend."
Freshman Adam Pummer led the way for the Orange and Blue by taking first on the horzontal bar with a season-best score of 8.950 and tying for first on the vault with a 9.350. Pummer also finished second in the all-around by scoring 52.000. UIC's Neil Faustino won the all-around title with a score of 52.300.
Fellow freshman Justin Spring won the floor exercise with a season high score of 9.550, and also finished second on the horizontal bar (8.900) and third on vault (9.250). All-American Peter Shostchuk, who is still recovering from injury, took a big step back by winning the pommel horse with a season high score of 9.100. Erik Garnett was the other event winner for the Illini, taking the parallel bars title with a mark of 8.800. Garnett also finished third on the floor exercise with a career high score of 8.950.
Also performing well for Illinois was Ben Newman, who finished second on the pommel horse (9.050), Bob Spelic, who tied for second on the parallel bars (8.700) and Bob Rogers, who was third on the horizontal bar (8.850). Junior Scott Wetterling did not compete in the meet for the Illini.
Next Saturday, March 1, the Illini play host to No. 1 Penn State and No. 6 Iowa at Huff Hall. The meet begins at 7:30 p.m.
