The seventh-ranked University of Illinois wrestling team dominated UT-Chattanooga in its first dual of the season, 38-6, with pins in four weight classes to contribute to the lopsided win. Top-ranked Alex Tirapelle and fourth-ranked Mark Jayne both extended their undefeated seasons with wins over the Mocs. Illinois moves to 1-0 on the season and UTC falls to 1-5.

The Illini won their first five bouts of the match jumping to a 23-0 lead, following two pins at 197 and heavyweight. The match began at the 165-pound weight class with senior Ben Hay (Sandwich, Ill.) beating Jon Sioredas, 10-4. Hay took advantage of opportunities in the second and third periods to score four takedowns in the match. At 174, 12th-ranked Pete Fried (Orland Park, Ill.) got a 11-3 major decision over Josh Ward, getting three takedowns and accumulating over two minutes of riding time.

Eighth-ranked Brian Glynn (Orland Park, Ill.) also won in fine fashion with another major decision defeating John Davis, 17-5. Glynn built a 7-1 lead in the first period, getting near fall points to end the first. He quickly got an escape and two takedowns in the second, putting together over three minutes of riding time. He solidified the win with another two takedowns in the third. The pins began at 197 pounds as sixth-ranked Jason Potter (St. Charles, Ill.) got a quick takedown, putting Drew Roberts on his back for a pin in just 33 seconds. That was followed up by freshman heavyweight 18th-ranked Mike Behnke (Villa Park, Ill.) got a takedown at 2:29 and had Jason Pennington pinned at 48 seconds.

UTC got their first win as 17th-ranked Matt Pitts downed Illinois true-freshman Dan Manzella (Chicago, Ill.) in a shootout, 20-15. Manzella jumped to a 9-2 lead before Pitts battled back to tie the match at 11 apiece and didn't look back. Fourth-ranked Mark Jayne (Elyria, Ohio) won by decision over Josh Keefe, 6-4, extending his season record to 11-0.

At 141 pounds, the Mocs came out victorious as Michael Keefe got a 7-4 decision over redshirt-freshman Michael Martin (Norfolk, Va.). Wresting in his first dual of his career, junior Anton Dietzen (Elmhurst, Ill.) got the team's third pin of the match taking down John Cofer twice before getting a pin at the 1:25-second mark.

In the final bout of the match, top-ranked Tirapelle (Clovis, Calif.) moved to 10-0 for the season, as he got his second win by fall this year. He led 2-1 after one period and with 20th-ranked Jake Yost in the down position to start the second, started working on a pin combination, which ended the match at 3:52.

The Illini will be back in action after Christmas at the 41st Annual Midlands Tournament in Evanston, Ill., on Dec. 29-30, competing against strong Top-25 competition.
