
Illinois Places Fourth at Mary Fossum Invitational

East Lansing, Mich. - Illinois shot a final-round score of 306 today to finish in fourth place at the Mary Fossum Invitational, hosted by Michigan State University at the par 72, 6,053-yard Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich. The Illini finish the tournament fourth with a 54-hole score of 921, 57-over par.
Kent State moved up from third place to first on the final day to win the 13-team invitational with a score of 907, 21 strokes ahead of the Illini. Wisconsin took second place (914), while Michigan State placed third (916).
Illinois had two golfers finish in the Top 10 individually. Senior Renata Young, who was tied for third after two rounds of play, carded a 76 during today's final round to finish tied for fifth at 8-over with a 54-hole score of 224. Junior Michelle Carroll jumped six places in the standings, from a tie for 15th to a tie for ninth, after her final round 75 gave her a three-round score of 228.
Nebraska's Sarah Sasse took medalist honors at the Mary Fossum Invitational. Sasse and Michigan State's Allison Foutch tied for first at 5-over par (221), but Sasse won the crown after defeating Foutch on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff.
Illinois will be back on the course next weekend, competing Sept. 28-29 at the Lady Northern in Iowa City, Iowa.
