Illini Finish Sixth at Lady Northern

Iowa City, Iowa - The Illini women's golf team finished in sixth place at the Lady Northern, held at the par 73, 6,000-yard Finkbine Golf Course on the campus of the University of Iowa. Illinois finished the 54-hole tournament 40-over par with a score of 916, shooting rounds of 308, 303 and 305. Kent State won the tournament with a 19-over score of 895, 21 shots ahead of the Illini.
The Lady Northern Intercollegiate is an annual tournament that serves as the Big Ten Championships fall preview, giving conference teams a chance to compete on the course that the spring championships will be held on. The tournament consisted of 12 teams, including eight Big Ten teams.
Leading the way for the Illini was senior Stephanie Cheney. Cheney earned the first Top 10 individual finish of her collegiate career, tying for 10th place at 7-over par. She carded rounds of 76-76-74 en route to a career-low 54-hole score of 226.
The Illini had two other golfers join Cheney in the Top 20. Junior Marla Cox placed 14th at 9-over with a score of 228. She also carded Illinois' lowest round of the weekend, a second-round score of even par 73. Senior Laurin Kanda tied for 20th place at 12-over, shooting a 231.
The Illini are in action again Oct. 7-8 at the Shootout at The Legends in Franklin, Ind.
