The 2002 Fighting Illini women's soccer team hosted Evansville in a preseason scrimmage on Saturday, winning 1-0. Alaree Gunville scored the only goal of the game with just 2:46 remaining in regulation. Hollie Schurr's cross set up Gunville for the game winning score from 15 yards out.

The Illini came out of the gate with a lot of energy firing five shots in the first eight minutes, and were able to stay aggressive throughout the game. Illinois fired 21 shots on the night while holding Evansville to just two.

New head coach Janet Rayfield was pleased with the team's performance. "Considering we've had only three days of practice, I'm very happy with how we played," said Rayfield. "We were able to create a lot of chances, which was surprising since we've been working primarily on defense in practice. I was able to get a good indication of how our freshman will contribute this year and picked up on some things that we need to work on in practice."

Illinois opens the regular season at the Tiger Invitational on Friday, Aug. 30 against the hosts from Missouri. They will then face Kentucky on Sunday, Sept. 1 to close out the tournament. The Fighting Illini then come home to face Butler on Friday, Sept. 6 and Cincinnati on Sunday, Sept. 8.
