Box Score

Champaign, Ill. - Trevor Frederickson hit a two-run pinch hit single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal a 4-1 come from behind win for Illinois in the nightcap of its Saturday doubleheader against Penn State. Earlier in the day Illinois dropped the first game of the twinbill 2-1. Illinois currently stands at 29-14 overall and 13-12 in the Big Ten while Penn State is 22-25 overall and 11-15 in Conference play.

Behind 1-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning of game two, Illinois used a leadoff walk to Andy Schutzenhofer to start a game-winning rally. After Luke Simmons flew out for the first out after Schutzenhofer walked, Patrick Arlis Drew Davidson and Patrick Arlis hit back-to-back bloop singles to load the bases for Trevor Frederickson, who was pinch hitting for Pat Flynn. Frederickson promptly sent a single to right that plated both Schtuzenhofer and Davidson to give Illinois a 2-1 lead. Illinois added insurance when Arlis came home when Vince DiMaria drew a bases loaded walk and Ted Rowe, running for Frederickson, scored on a T.F. Meagher fielders choice.

Starter Tim Gorski (3-1) earned the win after throwing seven complete innings and allowing on one run on three hits while walking two and striking out five. PSU starter Aaron Tressler (4-3) suffered the loss after allowing four runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings of work.

In Saturday's game one, Illinois was limited to one run on four hits by Penn State ace Mike Watson, who improved to 6-3 after throwing a complete game seven innings. Illini starter Josh Gold suffered the loss to fall to 2-4 despite allowing only two runs on four hits in seven innings.

Illinois got its one run in the third inning when Brandon Cashman doubled with two outs and came home on a Schutzenhofer RBI single.

Illinois and Penn State conclude their four-game series with a single game Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
