IOWA CITY, IOWA - The University of Illinois Men's Gymnastics team defeated the University of Iowa after previously losing to them in the season opening Windy City Invitational. The Illini were supported by strong performances on four out of six events. Illinois recorded a season high score on the pommel horse (36.675). The Illini also took the still rings (36.250), vault (36.725) and the horizontal bars (36.050). Illinois' record now stands at 17-2 overall, 6-2 in Big Ten competitions.
The Illini took the top two places on the still rings. Senior J.G. Ketchens topped the event with a score of 9.350. Fellow senior Sean-Paul Crawford came in at second (9.200). Crawford took the individual title on the vault to better his season high score (9.400). Ketchen also placed in the event tied with Andy Thornton of Iowa (9.375). Sophomore Bob Rogers recorded the top score for the Illini on the horizontal bars (9.550).
Freshman Peter Shostchuk broke his season and career high score on the pommel horse to take second place for the Illini (9.425). Senior Jonathon Plante followed in third place on the event recording 9.300. Ketchen tied Hawkeye Eric Block for the individual title on the parallel bars (8.800).
The Illini return to Huff Hall for the final time of the 2002 campaign on Saturday. Senior Day Festivities begin at 2 PM as the men host Illinois-Chicago.
