CHICAGO --The University of Illinois men's gymnastics team used solid scores on the high bar to defeat Illinois-Chicago, 207.900-204.000. The Fighting Illini tied their season-high team score of 36.350 on the high bar to beat the Flames. The Illini also dominated on the still rings (34.750) and vault (36.000). Illinois' record now stands at 7-2 overall, 4-2 in Big Ten competition.
The Illini took the top three places on the high bar. Sophomore Bob Rogers took the crown with a career-best score of 9.550. Junior Bob Spelic came in second with a 9.450 followed by freshman Ed Seward in third (8.950). Freshman John Cano took fifth with a score of 8.400.
Rogers was also the individual champion on the floor exercise, scoring a 9.050. Spelic and Cano also recorded individual victories as Spelic turned in an 8.850 to win the parallel bars competition and Cano took the title on the still rings with a 9.150.
Junior Mike Filla grabbed two second place finishes. He turned in the top score for the Illini to take second on the pommel horse (9.050) and was the runner up in the still rings (9.000) as well. Senior Jonathan Plante scored an 8.500 to take second place on the parallel bars. Spelic recorded Illinois' top vault score finishing third with a 9.100.
The Illini remain on the road throughout the month of February with their next competition scheduled for Friday night at Ohio State.
