Illini Send Three to Finals of Las Vegas Invitational

Dec. 7, 2002

The 10th ranked University of Illinois wrestling team will have three wrestlers in the finals of the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, senior No. 1 seed Matt Lackey at 165 pounds, sophomores and seventh seeds Brian Glynn at 174 pounds and Tyrone Byrd at 197. The three finalists, along with Arizona State, are the second-most of any school second behind the four finalists from Minnesota. After three sessions, the Illini are second out of 46 competing teams with 117.50 points. Minnesota leads the tournament with 123.00 points.

Top-ranked Lackey met No. 6 Tyrone Woodley in the semifinals in what was a rematch of this year's Missouri Open. Lackey was a 6-4 winner in the previous meeting and held on in a squeaker today with a 4-3 decision. He will meet Minnesota's Jacob Volkmann, ranked third in the nation, in tonight's finals. One match later, Glynn took on No. 20 Josh McLay of Minnesota, scoring a take down in sudden victory overtime for the 3-1 win. Glynn faces top-ranked Greg Jones of West Virginia, the defending national champion, for the tournament title at 174 pounds. Byrd became the third finalist for the Illini after a 4-2 upset win over the sixth-seed David Schenk of Cal Poly. He will meet No. 12 Anton Talamantes.

No. 1 seed at 184 pounds, Jason Potter lost a close 3-2 decision to in-conference rival Ralph DeNisco of Wisconsin in the semifinals to drop to the consolation round, but rebounded with a 3-1 sudden victory overtime win over C.B. Dollaway of Colby College to advance to the third-place match this evening against Ryan Halsey of Cal Poly, which will the second meeting this tournament. Freshman Alex Tirapelle won his consolation match this morning in a convincing 10-0 shutout of Brody Olsen of Northern Montana, followed by a 13-1 major decision of Purdue's Clovis Crane. He then beat the No. 4 seed in Adam Britt, 5-0, to secure a spot in the third-place contest to face Missouri's Kenny Burleson, ranked 14th.

Kyle Ott (125), Mark Jayne (133) and Cal Ferry (141) moved through their portions of the consolation bracket and each recorded seventh-place finishes in the tournament. After dominating Seth Lisa of West Virginia, 12-4, Ott squared off with fifth-ranked Ben Vombaur of Boise State falling to the All-American, 8-2. He then beat No. 20 Bobby Lowe of Minnesota, 8-4, for seventh. Jayne won his first match of the day by way of injury default and lost a heartbreaker to No. 12 Urijah Faber of UC-Davis, 13-12. Jayne was a 2-1 winner over Mark Simpson of Arizona State in the seventh-place match. After battling all the way through the consolation bracket, Ferry was downed again by the competitor that put him there. A rematch of his opening bout was another loss, this time a 5-3 sudden victory decision, to J.P. Reese of Missouri. Prior to the consolation quarterfinals, Ferry downed Michigan's Clark Forward, ranked 15th, in a 5-2 decision and took seventh with his 3-2 decision over Blake Gunter of Wyoming.
