Illini unveil up-tempo look

Champaign, Ill. - The Illinois women's basketball team unveiled its fast-paced look Wednesday night at the Assembly Hall at the Orange and Blue Scrimmage. With a 40-minute running clock, the Illini combined to score145 points and make nine three-point shots.

Aminata Yanni highlighted the evening for Illinois with 27 points while making 13 of 23 field goals. Tiffanie Guthrie statistically had the most complete came of anyone, totaling 19 points, four rebounds, seven assists and three steals. Guthrie also connected on 8 of 11 field-goal attempts, including 3 of 4 from three-point range. Karen Hagberg, one of the Illini's captains, had 16 points and seven points.

Freshman Janelle Hughes and sophomore Jer? Issenmann also got into the three-point act. Hughes was 3 of 5 from behind the arc en route to 13 points while Issenmann nailed two treys in five attempts and scored eight points. The players played for both sides.

Overall Illinois shot the ball well, combing to shoot 60.3 percent from the field (63 of 104). Defensively, Illinois showcased its full-court pressing defense, which led in part to 30 steals. Cindy Dallas finished off the 2001-02 regular season with six straight double doubles. She picked up right where she left off with 10 points and 10 rebounds to go along with a team-best six steals. Freshman Maggie Acuna had five steals.

"This was a chance to for us to get on the Assembly Hall floor in front of our fans, which was beneficial," said Head Coach Theresa Grentz. "There were a lot of positives, but we still have some work to do."

After the scrimmage the Illini signed autographs and met the fans. Illinois will play the Dominican Republic National Team on Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. at the Assembly Hall.
