
Illini Finish Second At Windy City Invitational

CHICAGO, Ill. -- The fifth-ranked Fighting Illini men's gymnastics team opened the 2002 campaign tonight at the 32nd annual Windy City Invitational. Iowa won the event with a total score of 207.650 followed by Illinois with a 207.025. Michigan took third (206.850) ahead of Ohio State (203.325), Minnesota (199.250) and Illinois-Chicago (197.675). The Illini begin the season with a record of 4-1.
Illinois recorded the highest team scores of the meet on both the pommel horse and the high bar. Sophomore Bob Rogers and freshman Peter Shostchuk each scored a 9.000 on the pommel horse to lead the Illini to a meet-high team score of 35.300. Rogers took the individual high bar title with a score of 9.250. Freshman Ed Seward tied for fifth place on the apparatus with a score of 8.700 as the Illini accumulated a meet-best team total of 24.200.
In his first collegiate meet, Shostchuk finished second in the all-around competition. Along with tying for fourth on the pommel horse (9.000), the Glen Gardner, N.J.-native tied for eighth on the floor (8.750), tied for 14th on the vault (8.900), tied for 13th on the parallel bars (8.250) and finished eighth on the high bar (8.350). Shostchuk also scored an 8.075 on the still rings for an all-around total of 51.325.
Also in the all-around competition, sophomore Scott Wetterling finished seventh with a 49.650 and senior Jonathan Plante scored a 49.150 to take eighth.
In other individual action, Wetterling recorded a second place finish on the vault with a 9.250 and junior Bob Spelic scored an 8.700 to tie for third on the parallel pars.
The home opener for the Illini is a co-ed battle on Jan. 19 at Huff Hall at 7 p.m. The fifth-ranked Illinois men take on No. 9 Nebraska. Illinois remains at home the following week to host No. 8 Minnesota.
