Terre Haute, Ind. - Shortstop Lindsey Hamma went 5-for-7 with two doubles and six RBI in helping Illinois to a doubleheader sweep of Indiana State Wednesday afternoon. The Illini (35-17) took the first game 5-1 and the nightcap, 8-1.

Kathryn Nevard improved her record to 18-8 with a complete game victory in the opening game. Nevard gave up just three hits and one walk, while striking out eight. Amanda Fortune (15-9) allowed just one unearned run, four hits and one walk, while striking out five in the second game.

Hamma was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI in the opener and 2-for-2 with another double and an RBI in the nightcap. Erin Jones was 3-for-7 with an RBI and three runs in scored in the twinbill. Catcher Janna Sartini also went 2-for-4 in the first game, then provided a three-run homer in second game.

As a team the Illini pounded out eight hits against the Sycamores' Kate McGinley (7-10) in the first game. Illinois scored all the runs it would need in game one in the third, all but one base runner coming after two were out. Erin Montgomery (1-for-3, BB) singled home Alicia Hammel, who led off the inning with a single. After two outs, Erin Jones walked, then Janna Sartini roped a double to left-center field, scoring both Montgomery and Jones.

Stacey Sparger doubled home the only Indiana State (12-27) run in the bottom of third with an RBI double. Nevard allowed just two more base runners after that on two singles. She also had five of her eight strikeouts in the final four innings.

Illinois padded to its lead in the sixth with two unearned runs. Jones and Hamma each singled up the middle driving home runs.

The Illini struck first in the second game as well, scoring two runs in the third inning on three hits and one error. Erin Jones singled home Megan Watson from second then scored on a double down the left-field line off the bat of Hamma.

The freshman native of Buffalo Grove, Hamma provided the damage in her next at-bat as well, with a line shot single up the middle, plating both Montgomery and Jones in the Illini fourth inning. Eight of nine batters in the Illini reached base in the second game as Illinois added 12 more hits against Indiana State starter Cassie Reeser.

Illinois provided an exclamation point offensively in the sixth inning. Lauren Gronski and Jones each reached base on singles, then Sartini sent a blast over the left-center field fence, making it 8-0. Indiana State added an unearned run in the sixth.

The Illini return to action Friday, hosting a doubleheader against Northwestern at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon at Eichelberger Field.
