Boca Raton, Fla. - The University of Illinois women's softball team was defeated by Maryland, 1-0, in the opening contest of the Worth Invitational in Boca Raton, Fla. The loss moves Illinois' record to 9-4 on the season and 0-1 in tournament play.
The loss spoiled a gritty pitching performance by Illini hurler Kathryn Nevard, who allowed only one hit and no walks while striking out two batters. The lone hit for the Terapins came in the third inning when Jillian Callaway singled to lead-off the inning. The loss moves Nevard's record to 6-3 on the season.
Maryland got the one run they needed in the bottom of the second inning. After an error by center fielder Erin Montgomery, the Terapins worked Beth Radford over to third base with two outs. With an 0-2 count to Casey Leiter, Nevard threw a wild pitch that got past Illinois catcher Janna Sartini and scored Radford.
The Illini threatened the Terapins and pitcher Monica Cyphert in the seventh inning. Lindsey Hamma was able to get to second base with one out, but Cyphert retired Alica Hammel and Kristie Sauter spoiling the Illini's chances for a comeback.
The Illini will play one more game Friday afternoon vs. the No. 10 Florida State Seminoles. The game is set to begin at 5 p.m. EST.
