Raleigh, N.C. - The University of Illinois women's softball team lost to the host North Carolina Tar Heels, 1-0, in their second game of the Triangle Classic. The loss moves Illinois' record to 6-2 and 0-2 in tournament play.
Amanda Fortune at one point retired 13 batters in a row, but ran into trouble in the top of the seventh inning. After Michelle Semmes opened up the seventh inning with a double, Fortune was able to get cleanup hitter Nicole Anter to pop up to her. However with one out, Kelly Ramsey knocked a first-pitch single to center field to score the lone Tar Heel run. The Tar Heels ruined a great outing by Fortune, who limited them to four hits and one walk, while fanning two batters. The loss moves Fortune's record to 1-1 on the season.
Erin Jones was 2-for-3 with one walk but the Illini hitters were met with great pitching from North Carolina hurler Radara McHugh, who has only given up one run for the Tar Heels this season.
The Illini will finish up play in their tournament pool at 10 a.m. tomorrow morning vs. Rhode Island and then will begin bracket play later in the afternoon. The time will be announced after pool play has finished up.
