STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - Kelly Mazzante scored a career-high 38 points, the most ever by a Penn State freshman, as the No. 17 Lady Lions beat Illinois 101-80 Thursday night.

Mazzante hit four 3-pointers to spark a 13-6 run in the second half and broke the freshman single-game scoring record with 9.4 seconds remaining on a running jumper in the lane. The previous record of 36 points was set by Jen Bednarek during the 1976-77 season.

Rashana Barnes scored 19 points for Penn State (18-6, 10-3 Big Ten). Jessica Brungo added 17.

Anne O'Neil scored 17 points for Illinois (12-12, 7-6).

Penn State opened with an 11-0 run, and Illinois missed its first seven shots before Allison Curtin's layup made it 11-2.

The Fighting Illini got within 28-26, but Penn State countered with a 12-0 run. The Lions took their biggest lead of the half, 45-30, with 1:26 remaining, on a layup by Mazzante.
