Despite strong performances on still rings and floor exercise, the fourth-ranked University of Illinois men's gymnastics team fell to No. 1 Michigan, 214.00-208.35 in Ann Arbor, Mich., Friday night. With the loss, the Illini fall to 6-2 overall and 5-2 in the Big Ten.
The Illini scored a 36.90 on still rings, the highest score in the country by nearly a point, with the help of first-place scores of 9.40 by Leo Oka and Linh Hoang, a 9.10 by J.G. Ketchen for fourth and a 9.00 by Sean-Paul Crawford for fifth. Crawford took first on floor as he posted a 9.25.
"We are a much better team than we showed tonight," head coach Yoshi Hayasaki said. "We had a great night on rings and floor and following that rotation had a chance to beat Michigan, but made mistakes in the final two rotations."
The Illini will be back in action tomorrow night as they travel to No. 10 Michigan State for a dual Big Ten meet with the Spartans. The 18th-ranked Illinois women's team will also join the men for a 6 p.m. start.
