VERONA, Wis. -
The Fighting Illini men's golf team finished ninth out of 15
teams in their first tournament under the direction of head coach Mike
Small. Illinois shot a final round of 298 to finish the tournament with a
team total of 893. During the tournament three Illini golfers shot rounds of
par or better. The host Wisconsin Badgers set a course record by shooting a
4-under par 860 on the 6,888-yard, 72-par course to win the team title.
Sophomore Geoff Lound paced the Illinois squad. He shot an even-par 72 in
the final round to bring his tournament total to 221 strokes. The Australian
tied for 17th place. Senior Tim Riley finished the tournament with 224
strokes, which tied him for 35th overall. Senior Larry Nuger tied for 38th
with a tournament total of 225. Sophomore Evan Olson finished the tournament
with 228 strokes to tie for 46th place. Newcomer Tony Peressini shot a 79 in
the final round bringing his tournament total to 231 shots. In his
collegiate debut, Peressini tied for 53rd.
The Illini will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. for the Falcon-Cross Creek
Invitational September 22-24. Nine of the teams the Illini competed against
over the weekend will travel to Urbana for the Northern Intercollegiate
later this month. The 18-team tournament will be held at Stone Creek Golf
Club September 30-October 1.
