FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Arthur Ziegler, Gymnastics '21. Arthur was a member of the gymnastics sqaud 1920 and 1921. He competed in the bars, sidehorse, tumbling, and rings. He was a member of Coach A. J. Schuettner's team that finished 3rd in the Big Ten Conference that year.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Albert E. Paxton, Baseball `25. Albert was a member of the baseball team in 1924 and 1925. He was the starting left fielder for Coach Carl Lundgren's '25 team that finished 12-8.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Thomas J. Dolan, Wrestling Manager/Circus Manager `29. Thomas was senior manager for the Illini wrestling team in 1929. The Illini grapplers finished second in the Big Ten that year with a 4-1 dual meet record and produced 2 individual national champions. The Illini finished 4th in the NCAA's that year. Thomas was also a manager for Circus in 1929.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Earl Drew, Basketball `29. Earl was a member of the Illini basketball team from 1927-29. Earl played forward for Head Coach J. Craig Ruby's team and he lettered in his last two years.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Irving Krakower, Soccer '29. Irving was a member Illini soccer team which beat Ohio State 8-0 that year. Irving played for coach Hartley Price's team.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Arnold E. Wolgast, Football `30. Arnold was a starting end for famed coach Robert Zuppke's teams in 1927 and 1929. During those two years, the Illini finished a combined 13-1-2, outscoring their opponents an amazing 307-51! The 1927 team finished first in the Big Ten Conference with a 5-0 record, and was proclaimed National Champions.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Elbert B. Kamp, Basketball '32. Elbert was on the basketball team from 1930-32. He was the captain on the 1931-32 team his senior year.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Joseph J. Zbornik, Soccer `33. Joe played halfback for the Illini soccer team and was a starter in 1933. Joe was a part of some glory years for Illini soccer. During a five year span in the late 20's and early 30's, the Illini soccer team won four straight Big Ten titles going undefeated with only 2 ties. They outscored their opponents 82-13 over that period.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Clifford C. Carlson, Baseball '34. Clifford was on the baseball team from 1932-34. He was a member of the 1934 Big Ten Championship team.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Ralph M. Fisher, Cross Country and Track `34. Ralph was a distance runner on the cross country and track teams from 1931-1933, lettering in both sports in 1933. In his three years on the cross country team, Ralph helped the team improve from a fourth place finish in the Big Ten in 1931, to second in 1932, and finally to an undefeated season and Big Ten Championship in 1933. On the track, Ralph helped lead the Illini to a fourth place finish in the Big Ten at both the indoor and outdoor championships in 1932. The team improved to a third place finish at both meets in 1933. The team also went on to place at the NCAA Outdoor Championships both years, earning an 18th place finish in 1933 and a 7th place in 1932.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Crain Portman, Football and Track `35 . Crain was a halfback for R.C. Zuppke assisting the team in taking 3rd in the Big Ten Confereance in 1933. For the track team, Crain ran dashes, hurdles, and relays for Coach Harry Bill.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of C. Marshall Miller, Track `36. Marshall was a member of the Illini track team 1933 and lettered in 1934. His specialty was the 440-yard dash and several relays. The Illini track team had a great year in 1934 winning the Big Ten Outdoor Championship and placing 19th at the NCAA's. Marshall played a big role in that success by placing 5th in the Big Ten in the 440-yard dash.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Herschel G. Benson, Ice Hockey `46. Herschel, or "Bucky" as he was better known, played left wing for the Illini hockey team from 1942-43. He lettered each of those two years and was a starter on two Big Ten championship teams. Herschel had 24 goals and 18 assists throughout his Illini career. He also had one career "hat trick" in which he scored three goals all in one period.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Arthur R. Ecklund, Baseball `46. Art was a pitcher for the Illini baseball team in 1945. He had a 4-3 record that year, including a 2-0 conference record. Art also had 4 complete games that year.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Joseph P. Van Hoorweghe, Baseball `46. Joseph lettered for the Illini baseball team in 1943. He played the outfield and batted .355 for Head Coach Wally Roettger's team during conference play.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of John F. Genis, Football `47. John was a standout tackle for the Illini in 1941, '42, and '46. He had the opportunity to play for both legendary coaches Bob Zuppke and Ray Eliot. John's 1946 team went 8-2 overall, including a Big Ten Championship with a 6-1 league record. This championship earned the Illini their first ever trip to the Rose Bowl. Despite being heavy underdogs to the previously undefeated UCLA Bruins, the Illini used a balance attack on the way to a 45-14 triumph. The 1947 Rose Bowl win propelled the Illini to a #5 national ranking in the final AP college football poll.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Kenneth Menke, Basketball '47 . Ken was a member of the UI's famed "Whiz Kids" basketball team who won the Big Ten Championship in 1942 and 1943. He also played for Doug Mills again in 1947.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Andrew M. Phillip, Baseball/Basketball '47. Andy was a member of the UI's famed Whiz Kids basketball team. He was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1961 and was the Illini MVP in 1942 and 1943. Phillip is
Illinois' only two-time consensus first-team All-American, and the last Illini to earn Associated Press first-team All-America honors. He was the Big Ten MVP in 1943. Phillip, Jack Smiley, Gene Vance, Ken Menke and Art Mathisen formed one of the nation's best teams in the early 1940s, winning 25 of 27 Big Ten games from 1941 to 1943 and earning two Big Ten titles. After the 1943 season, Phillip was called to duty in World War II with the Marine Corps. Illinois was ranked No. 1 in the nation, but following the final regular-season game, the entire Whiz Kid group entered the war effort. Following the war, he returned with Smiley, Vance and Menke for the 1947 season and helped the Illini to a second-place finish that season. Phillip played 11 seasons in the NBA, scoring 6,384 points as a pro. A five-time NBA All-Star, he was a member of the world champion Boston Celtics in 1957. In the NBA, Phillip played for the Chicago Stags, the Philadelphia Warriors, the Ft. Wayne Pistons and the Celtics. In addition to playing in five all-star games, he was named to the All-NBA team for the 1952 and 1953 seasons. Phillip retired from basketball after the 1958 season and later served as a probation supervisor for Riverside County in Palm Springs, Calif. He also showed great promise as a baseball star. The St. Louis Cardinals signed him to a baseball contract in 1937 at the age of 14. He never made it to the major leagues, but he ascended to the Class AAA level with the Cardinals' organization. Phillip broke five Big Ten records when he scored 40 points in a 92-25 win over Chicago March 1, 1943. He also played baseball at Illinois and was named the school's Athlete of the Year two years in a row as a sophomore and junior.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Arthur John Smiley, Baseball/Basketball '47. Jack was a member of the famed "Whiz Kids" who won the Big Ten Basketball Championship in 1942 and 1943. The Illini basketball team was 49-12 in Jack's three full years on the team including a 17-1 record in 1942-43. Jack also lettered in baseball in 1946.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Warren Ely, Track `50. Warren threw the shot put for the Illini track team in 1947 and 1948, earning letters both years. During the 1948 season, Warren placed in 8 meets, including two first place finishes and a 5th place throw in the Big Ten Championships. The Illini captured 3 Big Ten Team Championships and 1 NCAA title during Warren two years with the team.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Horace J. Tangman, Baseball `51. Horace was on the Illini baseball team from 1948-50 and lettered each of the last two years as a pitcher. He had a 3-1 conference record in 1949 and averaged a strikeout per inning throughout the year. He also contributed with his bat in 1950 with a .429 conference average.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of John E. Marks, Basketball '52. John was a member of Coach Harry Combes' basketball team from 1949-1951. John lettered on the 1951 team that won the Big Ten Championship and placed third in the NCAA Final Four. During John's two years on the varsity team, the Illini compiled a record of 36-13.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Richard E. Read, Wrestling/ Football Participant '52. Richard was a heavyweight wrestler on the team that won the Big Ten Championship and tied for 6th in the NCAA in 1952. In that year, he was 3-1-3 with 2 falls on the season, including scoring a point in the Big Ten Championships. Richard also was a tackle for the football team from 1948-1950.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Robert L. Wold, Golf Participant `53. Robert was a participant on the Illini golf team from 1950-53. He tutored under Head Coach Ralph Fletcher and was undefeated in singles and best ball doubles as a senior.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of William M. Shewchuk, Fencing `54. William was a part of the Illini fencing team from 1950-54 and lettered his last two years. The fencing team had some great years during William's tenure. During a three year period ending in 1954, the Illini fencing team won 36 dual matches in a row, won three Big Ten titles, and placed 6th, and 8th at the NCAA's. William's specialty was sabre and he was elected captain for his senior year. During his last year, he had a 38-5 record, won the Big Ten individual sabre title, and placed 13th in the nation.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Stanley H. Wallace, Football '54. Stan was on the football team from 1951-53. He was a member of the 1951 Big Ten Championship team that played in the 1952 Rose Bowl and the 1953 Big Ten Championship team.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of William R. Edwards, Basketball '64. Bill was on the basketball team from 1962-64. He was a member of the 1963 Big Ten Championship team and was team captain his senior year in 1964.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Mike Pickering, Football `72. Mike played under coach Jim Valek for three years and coach Bob Blackman during his senior year. He earned two Varsity letters, and helped the Illini win their final five games of the 1971 season. Mike was a very active member in the Fighting Illini Scholarship Fund and Varsity "I" Association. He was also heavily involved in helping to start the Johnny "Red" Kerr Merit Club golf outing by serving on the organizing committee.
FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of George Uremovich, Football '74. George was a letterwinner as a halfback for the football team from 1971-74. George rushed for several yards in his career as an Illini, but he became best know for what he accomplished as a kick returner. George was a part of the now famous lateral kickoff return in which Lonnie Perrin, Football '76, took the initial kickoff and headed toward the right side of the field. Lonnie then lateraled the ball all the way across the field to George who proceeded to take the ball all the way to the endzone for a touchdown. The total play covered 98 yards and still stands in a tie with James Coleman, Football '78, as the longest kickoff return in school history.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Robert L. Blackman. Bob was head football coach at Illinois from 1971-76 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1987.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Timothy C. Smith, Track `78. Tim was an
integral part of Gary Wieneke's track teams from 1975-78. By 1977, Tim was one of the fastest men in the world in the 800m run as Tim won the Big Ten Championship and held the eighth fastest time in the country. Twice an All-American, Tim helped lead the Illini to 3 Big Ten team titles as well as a 4th place team finish at the NCAA Indoor National Championships. His
outdoor 800m time of 1:47.84 still ranks 8th all-time in the Illini record books.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Tom Kolloff, Football '80. Tom was a member of Coach Gary Moeller's football team from 1976-1979.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Mark A. Smith, Basketball '81. Mark was a four-year letterwinner on Coach Lou Henson's basketball teams that compiled a record of 75-46 from 1978-1981. Mark was named the team MVP in 1979 and helped to lead the Illini to a 21-8 record and a #19 ranking in the final AP poll. Mark currently is in the top ten in 11 career statistical categories at Illinois. These include being the 4th All Time scorer with 1,653 points, 3rd in free throws made, free throws attempted, and field goals made, and 5th All Time in steals with 161. Smith is also ranked 7th in minutes played and in field goal percentage, 8th in All Time rebounds with 723, and 10th in both assists and blocked shots.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Frederick Barth, Fencing '81. Fred played for Art Schankin's Fencing team in 1978. He was an integral part of the team finishing in 2nd place of the Big Ten Conferance.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Max McCartney, Assistant Football Coach '80-`85. Max severed as an assistant coach and ran the defense under Mike White from 1980 to 1985. During his tenure, the Illini compiled an overall record of 40-27-2, including a Big Ten record of 35-17-1. Max helped guide the Illini to the Liberty Bowl in 1982, the Rose Bowl in 1983, and the Peach Bowl in 1985. The 1983 team that captured the Big Ten Championship with a perfect 9-0 record in conference play finished the season with a #10 national ranking.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Kevin Fairfield, Golf `90. Kevin was a member of Coach Ed Beard's golf team from 1987 to 1990. He was the #1 golfer during the 1990 season, where he averaged a score of 74.1. That season he was named to the All Big Ten Team and the All District IV Team. During his time at Illinois, the golf team register two runner-up finishes in the Big Ten Tournament, as well as capturing the 1988 Big Ten Championship.

FIGHTING ILLINI SALUTE in memory of Derrick R. Rucker, Football `93. Derrick was a strong safety for the Illini from 1989-92, lettering in '91, '92, and '93. Playing for Coach John Mackovic from '89-'91 and Lou Tepper in 1992, Derrick helped the Illini to a 30-17-1 overall record, including a Big Ten Championship in 1990. The 1989 team captured a win at the Citrus Bowl, and finished the season with a 10-2 record and a #10 national ranking in both polls. The Illini played in the Hall of Fame Bowl in 1990, the John Hancock Bowl in 1991, and the Holiday Bowl in 1992, allowing Derrick the chance to play in four bowl games in four years. Derrick started seven games in his career, averaging over 4 tackles a game his senior season.
