St. Louis, Mo.-University of Illinois wrestlers Carl Perry (141 pounds) and
Adam Tirapelle (149 pounds) advanced through quarterfinal and semifinal
round action Friday to advance to the finals of the 70th Annual NCAA
wrestling championships at the Kiel Center in St. Louis, Mo.
Perry (25-6) started things out for the Illini with an electrifying 7-5 win
over top-ranked and No. 1 seed Doug Schwab to advance to a semifinal
match-up with Clarion?s Mark Angle. Angle and Perry had split a pair of
matches earlier this season and the match was scoreless until Perry earned
an escape at 1:20 for a 1-0 lead. Perry was then cautioned for stalling at
0:44 and held on for the win. Perry was awarded one point for riding time
and a 2-0 victory.
Adam Tirapelle (39-2), beat Iowa?s Mike Zadick 3-1 in the quarterfinals
avenging his two losses of the regular season. He then beat Eric Schmiesing
of Hofstra 3-2 to advance to the finals. Schmiesing started the scoring in
the second period with an escape at 1:30 as Tirapelle trailed 1-0 to start
the third. Tirapelle countered with an escape of his own at 1:44 and earned
the match?s only takedown at 0:54 to take his first lead at 3-1. Schmiesing
had an escape with 11 seconds remaining for the 3-2 final.
Pat Quirk and John Lockhart also earned All-America honors Friday. Quirk
beat Mike Fickell of Penn 13-8 to remain alive in the wrestlebacks and
Lockhart beat Brent Boeshans of Oklahoma 2-1. Both Quirk and Lockhart will
wrestle for seventh place on Saturday.
The medal round matches will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday and the finals are
slated to begin at 6:30 p.m.
