WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Illinois women's track and
field team ran to a second-place finish at the Purdue Invitational today
in West Lafayette, Ind. Purdue won the meet with 161 team points.
Illinois captured second place with 101.50 points, edging third-place
Western Michigan (101.4 points). Michigan State and Alabama-Birmingham
also competed in the meet.
Illinois was led by its long sprinters and middle distance
runners. Senior Lyria Martin won the 400-meter dash in a time of 57.01
seconds. Senior Tara Mendozza won the mile run in a time of
4:55.98, beating the second-place finisher by six seconds.
Junior sprinting star Aleisha Latimer won the 60-meter dash in a time
of 7.47 seconds. Sophomore Jordana Meyer continued her successful indoor
season, winning the 600 meters in 1:36.70.
In the field, sophomore Adeoti Oshinowo won the shot put,
throwing 45 feet nine and 1/2 inches. The sophomore also placed third in
the 20-pound weight throw with a mark of 48'10.75".
The Illini will travel to Minneapolis, Minn. next weekend to
compete in the Big Ten Indoor Championships.
