LAS VEGAS - University of Illinois men's gymnast Linh Hoang fell short of qualifying for the U.S. National team with his 26th-place finish at the U.S. Winter Cup competition in Las Vegas, Nev., Saturday night.
Hoang (Houston, Texas) posted a 49.750 in the final round of all-around competition with his best mark of 8.90 coming on vault. The top 14 finishers in the meet made the U.S. National Team. Among those 14 are Ohio State's Jamie Natalie, Michigan's Justin Toman and former NCAA national champion and Minnesota Golden Gopher John Roethlisberger. USOTC team member Steve McCain won the all-around competition with a score of 55.550.
The Fighting Illini will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 19 at Huff Hall, playing host to No. 3 Penn State at 7 p.m.
