Box Score

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Tauja Catchings put the Illini team on her back in the second half, but it wasn't enough to stop rallying Iowa. The ninth-place Hawkeyes out-scored Illinois 47-34 in the second half for an 80-73 victory.

Catchings had 28 points and 12 rebounds, including 16 points in the second half. Cara Consuegra was equally as potent for Iowa with 23 points. She made 11 of 12 free throws, including several down the stretch.

Illinois led by as many as ten points in the first half and 39-33 at the half. Iowa took its first lead at 46-45 on a basket by Consuegra. Illinois responded by scoring the next five points, including a three-pointer from Kristi Faulkner to go back in front 50-46. Iowa, however, scored eleven straight points to go in front for good at 57-50. The Hawkeyes hit three 3-pointers in the run by Lindsay Meder (13 points), Leah Magner, and Mary Berdo. A short jumper by Susan Blauser brought the Illini back to within 65-63, but Iowa went on a 6-1 run to take command for good.

The Illini shot 50 percent from the field and out-rebounded Iowa, 37-32, but committed 21 turnovers to the Hawkeyes' 12. The game had 49 fouls and 61 free-throw attempts. Allison Curtin was particularly plagued with fouls, picking up her third in the first half and fouling out in the final five minutes. Curtin scored just two points in 23 minutes of action. Blauser (11 points) and Shavonna Hunter also fouled out. Iowa took advantage by making 28 of 34 from the line (.824).

Blauser had seven points in the first 10 minutes as the Illini built a 33-23 lead. Iowa closed to within two points with just over a minute to play in the half, but Hunter and Catchings converted two short shots to put Illinois back in front by six at 39-33 at the half.

The win by Iowa avenged an 86-60 Illini win on Jan. 7, but extended Illinois' losing streak to 14 games in Iowa City. The Illini (18-9, 8-5) haven't won in Iowa (7-15, 4-8) since 1983. Illinois returns to action on Feb. 20 at home against Ohio State. Tip-off is 2 p.m. at the Assembly Hall.
