HOUSTON - The University of Illinois women's swimming & diving team finished fifth in the six-team Continental Airlines Classic with a score of 162. Michigan scored a 209 by winning the final race of the evening to win the team title.
Senior Anna Christiansen reached the wall in a personal best time of 2:04.44 to take second place in the 200 butterfly. She took fourth place in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:20.95. Junior Jessica Aveyard also recorded a second place finish. She swam the 200 backstroke in 2:02.33. Aveyard also had a fourth place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:54.33.
"Overall we were inconsistent and a little bit flat," head coach Sue Novitsky said. "Some people are making progress, but they are doing well in practice and not carrying it over to the meets. We need to step it up when competition gets tough."
The same six teams (Illinois, Rice, Michigan, Penn State, Cal, Missouri) will compete in Houston on Saturday in the Rice Invitational.
