The University of Illinois volleyball team fell to the 13th ranked Ohio State Buckeyes in straight games Friday night, 9-15, 6-15, 12-15, in front of 1,646 fans at Huff Hall. With the loss the Illini fall to 11-12 overall and 2-10 in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes improve to 19-2 overall and 9-2 in the conference.
In game one the Illini jumped out to an early 4-1 lead. The Buckeyes stormed back with five points in a row on its way to a six point victory. Game two saw Ohio State race out to an 8-2 lead early in the game. After the Illini cut the lead to 8-4, the Buckeyes scored seven of the game's last nine points to win 15-6. In game three Illinois took a commanding lead of 9-1. But Ohio State eventually roared back to tie the game at ten apiece, and then scored five of the remaining seven points to win in dramatic fashion 15-12.
Illini game leaders included senior outside hitter Betsy Spicer and sophomore ride side hitter Anne Koester with seven kills a piece. Spicer also led the team in digs with nine. Ohio Stat out-hit the Illini for the match .340 to .086.
The Illini will next be in action on Friday, November 3 in East Lansing to take on the Michigan State Spartans at 6 p.m.
