Wrestling Picks Up Two Dual Wins On Road

Jan. 16, 2000

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The sixth-ranked University of Illinois wrestling team won 18 of 20 matches Sunday afternoon defeating Fresno State 39-6 and San Francisco 43-0 at the North Gym in Fresno, Calif. With the wins the Illini improved to 6-0 on the season and have now won 10 straight duals dating back to a 26-10 win over Wisconsin last season. Fresno State defeated San Francisco 28-6 to round out the afternoon's action.

The Illini picked up four pins and a major decision in the win over Fresno State. Ryan Escobar at 125 pounds, Adam Tirapelle at 149, Nate Patrick at 184 and John Lockhart at heavyweight each earned pins while Carl Perry dominated his match to win 21-6.

The second match almost mirrored the first with Tirapelle, Patrick and Lockhart each recording pins against San Francisco and Perry earning a technical fall at 2:37, leading 15-0.

Tirapelle, ranked second in the country at 149 pounds, and Patrick, ranked fourth at 184, each picked up three pins on the latest road trip which included a 33-9 win over Air Force on January 13. Tirapelle, a junior, has now recorded 10 falls this year after recording only eight in his first two seasons combined. His 18 career pins is only one shy of tying Eric Siebert for No.5 on the Illini's all-time career pins list. Siebert recorded 19 falls from 1994-98.

The Illini (6-0, 0-0) will open Big Ten wrestling action next weekend at No. 23 Indiana on January 21 and at Ohio State January 23.
