Illinois Sweeps Louisville On The Road

Sept. 18, 1999

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Illinois volleyball team defeated the University of Louisville, 3-0 (15-10, 15-2, 15-10) this afternoon at Cardinal Arena in Louisville, Ky. With the win, Illinois improves to 4-2 in 1999 while the Cardinals fall to 2-7.

Sophomore Shadia Haddad, who tallied a career-high 20 kills Friday in an exhibition match, had 12 kills while senior Tracey Marshall added in 13 kills. Freshman Sue Webber, who only played in the final points of game three, hit .455 with six kills and one error in 11 swings.

?Our passing was much better today,? Head Coach Don Hardin said. ?It was the best we?ve had on the road so far this season. We?ve been working with the upperclassmen a lot these past few weeks and we?ve gotten a great response from Melissa Beitz. She?s kept the team focused and provided crucial leadership.?

Kelly McClain, a native of Manteno, Ill., hit .383 to lead the Cardinals. She had 19 kills with 1 error in 47 swings.

Illinois returns to action Wednesday evening at Huff Hall. Indiana University will be in town for the Big Ten home opener scheduled for 7 p.m. Illinois then travels to Northwestern for a Friday evening match with the Wildcats in Evanston.

?We need to now focus our attention on the Indiana match Wednesday night,? Hardin said. ?They are a team that?s really on a roll. Indiana has five seniors in their lineup which should make it a really hot match.?
