CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- The University of Illinois' wrestling team defeated Marquette 37-3 and Southern Illinois 51-0 Saturday afternoon at Huff Hall in Champaign in front of 1,512 fans. With the win over Marquette, Illini head coach Mark Johnson earned his 100th career coaching victory.

"I didn't want to make too big of a deal out of it but it's nice," Johnson said. "The kids do the work and I get the credit, but things are going well. The kids overall looked pretty good today"

With two duals several wrestlers were pulling double duty on the mat. Ryan Berger picked up a win at 149 against Marquette then turned around and won at 157 against Southern Illinois. Nate Patrick (184) and John Lockhart (heavyweight) each picked up two pins while Mike Castillo won a pair of decisions, Pat Quirk was 2-0 with a forfeit win and Bill Zeman was 1-1 with a forfeit win. Zeman's loss, the only Illini loss in the two duals, came at the hands of the 20th-ranked wrestler in the nation, Peter Butville.

"Overall it was a pretty good performance. Johnson said. "We were a little slugjsh and had to fight through some things but I think they came through and did a good job."

Other winners for the Illini included Ryan Escobar, Kelly Madden, Adam Tirapelle, Matt Lackey, Chad Hay, Dave Stoltz and Griff Powell.

Next up for the Illini (3-0, 0-0) will be the Midlands Classic December 29-30.
