CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- Center Marcus Griffin had 27 points and 12 rebounds in leading Illinois to a 104-87 victory over NBC Thunder in the Illini's exhibition opener Thursday night.
The score stayed close until the final 10 minutes when Illinois moved ahead, 81-71. The Thunder cut the margin to 81-76, but the Illini went in front, 87-67, and pulled away from there.
Griffin, a junior college transfer who helped Peoria Manual High School to four consecutive Illinois Class AA titles, was 11-of-14 in field-goal shooting.
Cory Bradford and Cleotis Brown added 14 points each for the Illini. Another former Manual star, point guard Frank Williams, had nine points and 12 assists.
The Thunder was paced by J.D. Hullen's 26 points and Karim Scott's 20.
