Illinois, Indiana play to scoreless tie

Oct. 15, 1999

One week after playing to its first tie, the Illinois soccer team added another one to its ledger, this one was the scoreless variety to Indiana.

The 0-0 tie was the Hoosiers? (2-6-6 overall, 1-3-4 Big Ten) sixth tie of the year. Sophomore Sarah Heggen played in goal for the Illini, making five saves. The Illini had the best chance to score in the overtime session. Off a corner kick by Kelly Buszkiewicz, freshman Laura Freeman seemed headed for the net, but Indiana?s Ashley Davis made a diving save to preserve the tie.

The tie assures Illinois (9-4-2 overall, 3-3-2) of its second consecutive trip to the Big Ten Tournament. The Illini outshot the Hoosiers 15-12, led by five shots from Emily Brown. The sophomore from Winnetka, Ill., broke the Illinois single-season shots record with 82 for the year, breaking her own mark of 78 set last season. Brown also is one shy of Lisa Baldwin?s record for most goals in a season. Brown has 13 on the year.

While the Illini are 3-1 at home in the Big Ten, they are 0-2-2 in conference road games. Up next for Illinois is Purdue at West Lafayette. The Boilers dropped their eighth in a row to Iowa tonight.

?We need to find a way to get it done on the road,? said Illinois head coach Tricia Taliaferro. ?We certainly had our chances again tonight, but couldn?t capitalize.?
