Athletic Trainers are health care professionals who collaborate with physicians, dietitians, strength and conditioning coaches, and other allied health care professionals to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, rehabilitation, intervention of emergency care, acute and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities.
While the University of Illinois does not offer a degree in athletic training which qualifies students to become certified athletic trainers, the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics does utilize Athletic Training Aides to assist in the daily operations of the athletic training rooms. Athletic Training Aides are student who observe, learn, and assist the certified athletic trainers in the care and rehabilitation of varsity student-athletes. This clinical experience is valuable for students wishing to pursue careers in healthcare fields such as athletic training, physical therapy, occupational therapy, physician assistant and orthopedic medicine.
Position Overview
Athletic training aides are employed to assist the full-time staff in daily operations of the athletic training room, practices, and games. This position must be able to commit to 15-25 hours per week.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Facility maintenance and various organizational tasks
- Practice and game preparation, coverage
- Help with rehabs and treatments of student-athletes
What year in college do I have to be to work as a student aide? You can be any year in college to apply for this position
Do I have to be CPR certified? No, you do not have to be certified to apply. If any opportunities arise during your time volunteering, we will try and get you certified.
Can I apply or start in the middle of a semester? Volunteer hours only begin at the start of each semester. The dealine to apply for the Fall Semester is April 1 and November 1 for the Spring Semester.
Is prior experience in athletic training or physical therapy required?No experience needed.
What sports will I have the ability to volunteer with? Exact sport assignment will vary, but this position will specifically work with our Olympic sports - examples include track & field, soccer, gymnastics, softball, etc. Football is NOT included.
Is this position paid? No, this is a volunteer position. If you are interested in a paid position, look into the football student aide program.
What would the hour commitment be per week? Your hour commitment is flexible based on your interest and schedule, ranging from 5-20 hours. Never exceeding 20 hours per week.
