University of Illinois Athletics

Irwin Academics Center

ABOUT THE BUILDING:

OPENED: Fall 1997

ADDRESS: 402 East Armory Ave., Champaign, IL 61820

The Irwin Academic building, formerly the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity house, is conveniently located in the center of campus, offering the very best in academic services to Illinois student-athletes. In addition to the academic offices, it houses study areas, an expansive computer room, and meeting rooms that over 600 student-athletes use throughout the year.

The Irwin Academic Services Center was originally designed as the Sigma Pi fraternity house in 1920 by Joseph William Royer, a graduate of the University in 1895 with a degree in architectural engineering. The building with its intersecting gables, half-timber and stucco veneer, stone trim and tudor arch gallery on the first floor, is an excellent example both of Royer's Tudor Revival projects and the Tutor Revival style in general.

In the fall of 2007, the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics completed the expansion of the Irwin Academic Services Center. With the great continued support from the Irwin Family Foundation, this project will assist student-athletes in many academic areas. The $4.6 million expansion of the Irwin Center added 11,400 square feet, allowing more opportunities for the student-athletes to achieve their academic goals. Student resource areas comprised of a presentation room, a new general study area, individual tutoring and study rooms, and a computer lab allow this all to happen. Student-athletes now have more access to computers, better environments to meet with tutors with less distraction and the opportunity to have more space to concentrate on their academic endeavors.
