CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Adam Jilly has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after making his collegiate debut at the Battle In The Bay Classic last week, the conference office announced on Wednesday.
A native of Budapest, Hungary, Jilly earned the first singles and doubles wins of his college career at the event, which ran from Sept. 11-14 in San Francisco.
Jilly's first singles victory came in ranked fashion, with the Illini freshman defeating Arizona State's No. 118 Jelani Sarr in three sets. After the players split the opening two sets, Jilly prevailed in the third-set superbreaker by a 10-6 margin to secure the win.
The No. 10-ranked newcomer in the ITA preseason rankings, Jilly picked up his first doubles triumph on Friday in a 6-3 decision over Cal's Bernardo Munk Mesa/Lenn Luemkemann in the opening round of the doubles consolation bracket.
The honor is Jilly's first career Big Ten Freshman of the Week nod. The Big Ten introduced Freshman of the Week in January, marking Illinois' first-ever recipient of the weekly award.
