LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The No. 12 Fighting Illini men's golf team is in seventh at the Southern Highlands Collegiate entering Tuesday's final round.
The Illini shot six strokes better as a team on Day 2 at Southern Highlands Golf Club, carding an 8-over 296 to post a 36-hole score of 598 (+22).
Junior Ryan Voois paced Illinois in Round 2, recording six birdies en route to a 2-under 70 and jumping 32 spots up the individual leaderboard where he is tied for 27th with a 36-hole tally of 149 (+5).
Voois sits one stroke behind sophomore Max Herendeen who leads the Orange and Blue in a tie for 16th. Herendeen followed his opening 75 (+3) with a 1-over 73 on Monday to move to 4-over. He is two strokes outside of the top 10 with 18 holes to play.
Senior Jackson Buchanan and sophomore Ethan Wilson rounded out the scoring for the Illini in Round 2. Buchanan shot his second straight round of 76 (+4) and is tied for 40th at 152 (+8). Wilson's 77 was one stroke better than his opening round, and he is tied for 61st with a two-round total of 155 (+11).
Freshman Trey Marrion is tied for 38th after two rounds with a score of 151 (+7), while Classmate Jake Birdwell – competing as an individual – is tied with Buchanan for 40th at 152 (+8).
No. 2 Auburn (-2) leads the team race, followed by host UNLV (+1) and No. 24 Pepperdine (+11) in second and third, respectively. New Mexico (+12) is fourth, while No. 9 Virginia and No. 4 Oklahoma sit one spot ahead of the Illini in a tie for fifth.
Round 3 is set for Tuesday, with tee times off Holes 1 and 10 beginning at 11 a.m. CT/9 a.m. PT. Live scoring is available via Clippd Scoreboard.
