PAUMA VALLEY, Calif. – Ryan Voois is the leader in the clubhouse and the 13th-ranked Fighting Illini men's golf team is in fifth place after play was halted due to darkness Monday evening in Round 2 of the Pauma Valley Invitational.
The Illini teed off in the lead grouping and were among the four teams – with playing partners and host Loyola Marymount, No. 2-ranked Arizona State and No. 33 San Diego – to finish 36 holes before play was stopped.
Voois posted back-to-back rounds in the red on Monday, carding a 2-under 69 in Round 1 before matching his season-best with a 4-under 67 in Round 2. A Southern California native from Ladera Ranch, approximately 65 miles from Pauma Valley Country Club, Voois climbed 10 spots up the individual leaderboard with his afternoon round and holds a slim one-stroke lead over Texas Tech's Calum Scott who is 5-under with four holes remaining in his second round.
Behind Voois, Illini senior Jackson Buchanan posted a 36-hole tally of 140 (-2) in a tie for 11th. Freshman Trey Marrion (+2) and sophomore Max Herendeen (+3) are tied for 39th and 44th, respectively. Sophomore Ethan Wilson is 7-over in a tie for 65th with 18 holes to play.
Freshman Jake Birdwell, competing as an individual is 2-over with five holes remaining in his second round.
Play is slated to resume Tuesday morning 9:30 a.m. CT/7:30 a.m. PT with the completion of Round 2 before the field is re-paired for a final round which will tee off at approximately 12 p.m. CT/10 a.m. PT.
