VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Illinois men's and women's track and field teams finished the first day of the NCAA Indoor Championships on Friday (March 14) from the Virginia Beach Sports Center. The women's team leads competition after five women reach the podium to score 21 points: Tacoria Humphrey (8), Phethisang Makhethe (6), Sophia Beckmon (4), Jordan Koskondy (2) and Tori Thomas (1).
Humphrey took the silver medal in the long jump to be the women's program's highest finish ever in the event with her 6.75m (22-1 3/4) leap. She's the school's fourth long jumper to earn All-America honors in the indoor season. Beckmon became the fifth long jumper in program history to stand on the podium with her fifth-place finish, 6.67m (21-10 3/4).
Makhethe earned bronze in the weight throw this afternoon to be the women's program's first-ever All-American in the event with a 23.08m (75-8 3/4) toss. Koskondy became the school's second All-American with her seventh-place finish on the program's second-best throw, 22.48m (73-9).
Thomas became the first women's pole vaulter in school history to earn NCAA Indoor All-America honors in consecutive seasons in her tie for seventh place today, 4.40m (14-5 1/4). She placed sixth last year with the same mark and now matches Stephanie Richartz with two All-America honors (2013, 2015). They are the only two Illini women to earn All-America honors during the indoor season in the event.
Cody Johnston etched himself in the record books as the fifth Illini man to become an NCAA Indoor All-American in the pole vault equaling his personal-best mark, 5.61m (18-4 3/4). He's the first one in 30 years for the program in the indoor season as the last to stand on the podium was Daren McDonough who took second in 1995.
