PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The No. 11 Illinois wrestling team (8-3, 3-3 B1G) dropped their dual to No. 13 Rutgers (11-4, 3-2 B1G), 16-15, on Sunday (Jan. 26). The Fighting Illini and Scarlet Knights split the 10 bouts right down the middle at five apiece being tied at 15 points after the final bout. However, Rutgers won on the tiebreaking criteria of match points (38-34) to get the win at 16-15.
No. 4 at 133 pounds Lucas Byrd improved to 13-1 on the season with his 6-5 decision win over No. 9 Dylan Shawver (RUT) this afternoon. No. 12 at 149 pounds Kannon Webster had the largest margin of victory on the day for Illinois in his 8-1 decision win over No. 20 Andrew Clark (RUT). He moves to 10-4 on the season becoming the fifth starter to cross into double-digit wins.
No. 13 at 165 pounds Braeden Scoles went to 12-2 on the year after his 4-1 decision win over No. 26 Anthony White (RUT). No. 10 at 184 pounds Edmond Ruth bounced back with a grueling overtime win over No. 18 Shane Cartagena-Walsh (RUT), SV-1 4-1. No. 18 at 197 pounds Zac Braunagel picked up the final win for Illinois in his upset over No. 16 John Poznanski (RUT) via decision 4-2.
