TERRE HAUTE, Ind. --Â Illinois baseball (5-10) led by as many as five in the contest but would let its lead slip late as they fell to Indiana State (12-3), 7-6, today at Bob Warn Field.
Cooper Omans, who did not factor in the decision, tossed his first quality start of season, allowing one run, unearned, on three hits over 6.0 innings, racking up a career-high 10 strikeouts.
Camden Janik and Brody Harding both went yard, launching solo and three-run blasts, respectively. Coltin Quagliano turned in a three-hit performance and Vytas Valincius tallied two RBI in the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Janik put the Illini on the board in the first, launching his third home run of the season to left center, with two outs in the inning.
Omans went to work then on the mound, allowing just one hit over his first four innings of work, collecting seven punchouts along the way. The Sycamores would eventually push a run across in the fifth, but Omans would pick up strikeouts nine and 10 in the sixth, retiring the side in order to end his outing and earn the quality start.
Illinois added three runs in the fourth thanks to Harding's three-run home run, his first of the season, and then two more in the sixth thanks to Valincius' two-RBI single, making it a 6-1 game.
The Fighting Illini were unable to hold the lead, as Indiana State scored six times in the seventh to grab the 7-6 win.
