ANN ARBOR, Mich. – No. 14 Illinois used five scorers in double figures and a strong defensive performance to take down Michigan, 88-73, at Crisler Center on Thursday night.
Quincy Guerrier and Coleman Hawkins both registered a double-double in the win, the first Illini duo to reach that mark in a conference road game since 2020. The victory marked Illinois' seventh consecutive triumph over the Wolverines, the program's third-longest streak in series history.
Hawkins made plays on both ends of the court from start to finish, recording his first double-double of the season with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds. Hawkins finished with a career-high six steals, including five in the second half and three in the final 4:02 of the game, and he added four assists, one block, and zero turnovers. His rejection marked his seventh straight game with at least one block, while he tallied three 3-pointers for the fifth time this season.
Guerrier secured his sixth double-double of the season after nearly reaching that mark before halftime with nine points and nine rebounds in the first half. Guerrier finished with 16 points and 14Â rebounds, the eighth time in his last nine games that he has scored in double figures. His six offensive boards also marked a new season-high.
Ty Rodgers matched his career-best scoring mark with 15 points, including nine in the second half. Notching three of his five rebounds on the offensive glass, Rodgers also amassed three assists and a career-high two blocks.
Marcus Domask ended his outing in double figures for the eighth straight game, accumulating 15 points, three rebounds, three assists, one block, and one steal.
Justin Harmon also reached the double-digit scoring mark with 11 points off the bench, including nine points after the break. Harmon also grabbed two steals, which matches his season-high mark, and two rebounds.
Luke Goode knocked down two 3-pointers en route to an eight-point performance. Goode also registered four rebounds.
The Illini totaled a season-high nine steals, which helped the Orange and Blue finish with 11 fast-break points. Illinois' dominance on the glass helped the visitors secure 16 second-chance points on 13 offensive boards while winning the overall rebounding battle, 39-29.
With a season-low six turnovers, the Illini trailed for only 23 seconds en route to the 15-point victory, the team's second Big Ten road win of the season.
Michigan opened the scoring, but the Illini did not let the home side lead for long. Illinois went on an 11-0 run over the span of over four minutes, a stretch that included five points from Hawkins and four from Rodgers, to take an early nine-point edge.
The Wolverines began to claw back, cutting their deficit to three points before a 5-0 run from the Orange and Blue pushed the visitors' advantage back up to eight points. With Michigan moving the Illini's lead to one point, baskets from Domask and Rodgers put Illinois ahead by five with nine minutes to play in the opening half.
Hawkins rattled in his second 3-pointer of the night one minute later before the Orange and Blue converted on four straight field-goal attempts, which fueled an 8-4 run for the away side.
The Illini went into halftime with a 37-36 advantage after the Wolverines scored the final five points of the opening frame. Hawkins led the way with 10 points in the first half, the most by either side. Guerrier added nine points and nine rebounds, including four on the offensive glass, in his team-high 19 minutes prior to the break.
After Michigan evened game at 38 early in the second half, Illinois went on a 7-0 run over a two-minute span to pull back in front. Buckets from Rodgers, Hawkins, and Domask sparked the scoring streak and forced the Wolverines to call a timeout with the visitors ahead, 45-38.
A 7-0 Wolverine run reduced the Orange and Blue's edge to one point, but the Illini put together one of their strongest stretches of the game in response. An and-1 from Harmon and a Goode triple served as the front half of a 10-0 Illini run. Turning defense into offense, a Hawkins steal led to a Harmon transition flush and a Domask block led to a Rodgers layup to give Illinois a 58-47 edge with 11 minutes to play.
Holding Michigan without a field goal for over six minutes, Illinois took advantage of steals and offensive rebounds, which helped kickstart a 6-0 scoring run for the Illini. Hawkins recorded two takeaways during that stretch while Guerrier converted an acrobatic putback effort to expand the Orange and Blue advantage to 16 points with eight minutes left on the clock.
With Illinois' lead down to 12 points with five minutes remaining, Hawkins recorded a block and a steal in the span of one minute before the Illini senior grabbed an offensive rebound and made the second-chance layup. Less than a minute later, Hawkins found Guerrier, both of whom recorded a double-double, for an alley-oop to cap off a 15-point road win for the Illini.
No. 14 Illinois (13-4, 4-2 B1G) returns home to take on Rutgers on Sunday afternoon. Tipoff from State Farm Center is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT on Big Ten Network.
